You're Looking for Someone Who Actually Gets It
Maybe you're tired of feeling anxious all the time and not understanding why. You overthink everything, question yourself constantly, and feel exhausted from trying to manage everyone else's emotions while ignoring your own. Your relationship with your parents feels complicated, and you don't know how to talk to them without it turning into a fight or shutdown.
You might be navigating a big transition like graduating high school, starting college, or figuring out what comes next, and instead of feeling excited, you feel stuck and overwhelmed. On the surface, your life looks fine, but internally you're struggling in ways that are hard to explain.
If this sounds familiar, you're in the right place.

I'm Joy, and I Understand What You're Carrying
I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York specializing in anxiety, family stress, and the transition to independence for teens and young adults ages 16-25. I work with thoughtful, self-reflective people who want to grow and are ready to do the work, but feel stuck in their heads, overwhelmed, and unsure of who they are outside of family expectations.
Credentials
MA in Counseling, LMHC
Specializations
Teen and young adult anxiety, family systems, trauma-informed care, transition to independence
My approach is grounded in understanding that anxiety often stems from family patterns, perfectionism, and a weak sense of self rather than individual pathology. I create a space where all emotions are welcome.
What Brought Me to This Work
I was a teacher for 30 years, and I saw how deeply students’ personal and family lives shaped their confidence, goals, and sense of self. Many capable young people struggled under the weight of what they were carrying emotionally.
I also saw how family dynamics created pressure and disconnection. Unrealistic expectations, difficult communication, and feeling misunderstood often shaped how young people saw themselves.
Becoming a therapist grew naturally from that experience. I wanted to support young adults in a deeper way by helping them understand themselves, work through family patterns, and build lives that feel like their own.
My personal experiences shape how I show up for clients. I grew up in a home where emotions stayed unspoken and difficult feelings often felt unwelcome. That experience stayed with me.
I care deeply about creating a space where every emotion has room. Clients can show up honestly without feeling pressure to perform, minimize, or stay positive.
Any feeling is allowed here.
How I Work
Therapy with me feels conversational and grounded. I'm warm and personable, and many people feel comfortable quickly. You do not need to show up polished or prepared. Sweatpants are welcome. Big feelings are welcome.
I meet clients where they are. Early sessions focus on building trust and helping you feel at ease. Once that foundation is there, we can gradually explore deeper and more challenging topics.
My approach combines insight with practical support. We explore patterns like perfectionism, people-pleasing, and self-doubt while building tools for communication, boundaries, and everyday life. The goal is to help you understand your experiences and make meaningful changes.
I am direct and honest. When clients ask for my perspective, I share it thoughtfully. I also use humor when it fits to keep the space human and approachable. Sessions are meant to feel steady, supportive, and comfortable so you can explore your experiences and grow with confidence.
Who I Support
I work with adolescents and young adults ages 16–25 who feel anxious, self-doubting, and tired of constantly questioning themselves. Many are thoughtful and self-reflective and want to grow, yet often find themselves putting everyone else first and feeling unsure of who they are outside of family expectations.
Many clients also struggle in relationships, especially with parents. They want support learning how to communicate clearly, set boundaries, and care for themselves without guilt. Some are moving through major life transitions such as graduating high school, starting college, switching paths, or entering early adulthood.
Common concerns clients bring include:
- Constant anxiety and overthinking without clear reason
- Feeling responsible for everyone else's emotions and struggling to prioritize their own needs
- Difficulty trusting their own feelings and instincts
Why Clients Choose Me
Clients feel comfortable with me because I'm genuine, accepting, and meet them where they are. They don't feel judged or like they're "too much." They feel understood, supported, and less alone in what they're experiencing.
Here's what clients tend to value:
- I understand family dynamics deeply – 30 years teaching gave me unique insight into how family patterns impact young people
- I specialize in high-functioning anxiety – I work with people who look like they have it together on the surface but feel anxious and stuck internally
- I'm warm and down-to-earth – Therapy with me doesn't feel stiff, clinical, or intimidating
- I'm direct and honest
– I give my opinion when asked and tell it like it is without being harsh
