Getting Started Questions

  • How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck and those feelings are affecting your daily life, relationships, or ability to move forward, therapy can help. You don't need to wait until things are unbearable. Therapy is for anyone who wants help understanding and managing what they're going through. If you're unsure, we can talk about it during your free 15-minute consultation.

  • What happens in the first session?

The first session is conversational and focused on understanding what's bringing you in right now. We talk about what's been weighing on you, what feels hardest, and what you're hoping therapy can help with. I don't use a formal intake systems or long forms. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and understood, not interrogated. We start building trust from the first conversation.

  • How do I schedule an appointment?

You can reach out by email at joy@apathtojoy.com, call or text 315-203-8851, or use the contact form on this website. We'll start with a free 15-minute consultation to talk about what you're going through and see if we're a good fit. If it feels right, we'll schedule your first session from there.

  • What should I prepare before my first session?

You don't need to prepare anything. You don't need to have a clear explanation of what's wrong or know exactly what you want to work on. Just show up as you are. We'll figure it out together. Sweatpants are always welcome.

Logistics

  • How long are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes. Most people find this is enough time to dig into what's happening without feeling rushed or overwhelming.

  • How often do people come to therapy?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. Once things improve and you're feeling more stable, we can adjust to every other week or less frequent. We'll figure out what works best for your needs and schedule.

  • Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. I offer both in-person sessions at my office in Fayetteville, NY and virtual sessions via secure telehealth for clients throughout New York State. Virtual therapy can be helpful for students with busy schedules, people without reliable transportation, or anyone who prefers meeting from home.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Life happens, and I understand that. I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee. We'll talk about this during your first session so you know what to expect.

  • Where is your office located?

My office is at 6834 East Genesee Street in the Understanding Building, 2nd floor, Fayetteville, NY 13066. There's parking available, and the building is accessible. If you're coming for the first time and have trouble finding it, just call or text and I'll help you out.

Fees and Insurance

  • What are your fees?

Individual sessions are $150 for 50 minutes. I also offer parent coaching sessions at the same rate. Payment is collected at the time of service.

  • Do you accept insurance?

I'm an out-of-network provider, which means I don't bill insurance directly. However, I can provide you with a superbill (detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. I recommend contacting your insurance to verify your out-of-network benefits before we start so you know what to expect.

  • Do you offer a sliding scale?

I have limited sliding scale availability for clients who need it. If cost is a concern, let's talk about it during your free consultation. I want therapy to be accessible, and we can discuss what options might work for your situation.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept credit cards, debit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and electronic payments through my client portal. Payment is collected at the time of each session.

Therapy Process

  • How long does therapy take?

It varies. Some people notice improvement within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. Therapy isn't a quick fix, and growth takes time. We'll work at a pace that feels right for you, and there's no set timeline you need to meet. We can check in regularly about how things are going and adjust as needed.

  • What approach do you use?

My approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and relational. I draw from different frameworks depending on what you need, but I don't get stuck on specific modalities. What matters most is that therapy feels warm, supportive, and practical. We focus on understanding patterns, building self-trust, and developing skills that fit your life.

  • Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with a few legal exceptions. I'm required to break confidentiality if there's a risk of harm to yourself or others, if there's suspected child or elder abuse, or if a court orders release of records. Outside of those situations, what you say in therapy stays in therapy. I take confidentiality seriously.

  • What if I don't know what to talk about?

That's completely normal, especially in the beginning. You don't need to come in with a prepared topic or agenda. Sometimes we'll pick up where we left off. Sometimes something happened during the week that feels important to discuss. Sometimes we'll explore patterns or work on skills. I'll help guide the conversation, and we'll figure out what's most helpful together.
